Names of animal groupings always caught my ear.
There’s a clutter of spiders in my house each year.
A chattering of starlings will make your ears splinter
A murder of crows they make a killing each winter.
You have a caravan of camels and a barrel of monkeys,
Down on the quays there’s a shuffle of junkies.
The lions and the peacocks share some pride,
Armies of caterpillars, side by side.
Alligators, well, they have a congregation.
Yesterday was Brian Cowen’s inauguration.
It might said that a swarm descended,
But that would make a grist of bees offended.
If it’s a crash of rhinos, and a bloat of hippos
What would you call a large gathering of biffos?
New Leader, New Grouping
May 8, 2008Mown Down
May 7, 2008I startled a baby rabbit with my mowing
It left its hiding place and fled.
I could see its heart thumping, not knowing
I’d find it minutes later lying dead.
Thorny
May 7, 2008Glorious weather, birds in full song.
The May’s not out, but it won’t be long.
When it does appear, you can bet your bottom dollar,
The rains will return, and the winds will reholler.
Roger That..!
May 6, 2008On this day in nineteen hundred and fifty four…
Fifty four years ago,
Four minutes was no more.
Lisbon Tweety I
May 2, 2008Lisbon, the city, I’m told is one of note.
Europe, the treaty, only us Irish vote.
There’s very few, that have a clue, essentially.
Perhaps by chance, perhaps, intentionally.
According to former President d’Estaing
Well fed mushrooms, is the well laid plan.
Just get the boggers, to pass their referendum,
We get job security, scripting the addendum.
Pheasantly Surprised
May 2, 2008Morning’s blazing sun reflecting red
On the neck of a pheasant.
Summer has won, Spring is now dead
Mourning the passing is pleasant.
How It Should Be Played
May 1, 2008Football, the beautiful game.
Simple in nature, simple in name.
Overpaid brats throwing pitiful spats,
But then you see Lionel Messi and gasp.
